  • Details of any other vehicles, people or property involved.
  • Photos of any damage to your car and the other vehicles involved.

What happens when I make a claim on my insurance policy?

We always try to help guide you through the process and settle your claims quickly. Every claim is different, so it can depend on the situation and what information is available. Once your claim has started, we will liaise with the insurer and keep you updated on progress. If your car is damaged, we will recommend a local approved garage to repair it for you.

Please bear in mind that the motor trade is experiencing delays in obtaining manufacturer parts where they are sourced from the UK, Europe or further afield. We work closely with our insurers and authorized repairers to minimise delays, but in the current environment it can sometimes take weeks to secure the required parts which in turn will affect the timing of your repair. The repairer will be able to advise you if this will impact your claim. It’s best you don’t arrange any repairs until we’ve contacted you with your options, as this could affect your claim. If you’re not sure or need some guidance, please give us a call.

We understand that making an insurance claim can be a stressful time for you. CTH are here to support you - so please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns concerning your claim.

What if I am in an accident involving someone else?

Road traffic accidents involving others can be stressful and sometimes complicated. We are here to help you and guide you through the process of making a claim.

There are three important points to remember:

1. Make sure you are safe.

Most importantly, call the emergency services for anyone who needs assistance (including yourself). Only once everyone is safe, is it time to think about the insurance claim.

2. Get details of the incident.

The claim will need to detail who was responsible for the accident. It’s important to keep calm and collect as many factual details as you can about the incident, whilst it's fresh in your mind. Important details include:

  • Details of what happened, when and where.
  • Details of any other vehicles, people or property involved.
  • Photos of any damage to your car and the other vehicles involved.
  • Sketch of the incident – road, position of vehicles, etc
  • Contact details for any witnesses.
  • Police reference number (if applicable).
3. Contact CTH.

You must advise us when you’ve been involved in an accident, even if you’re not thinking about making a claim. You will also need to let us know if a third party is involved, as we will need to deal with any claims made against you. Examples of an accident involving an insurance claim:

  • You have caused damage to someone else’s property with your vehicle
  • Someone else was involved has been injured
  • You’ve been injured as a passenger in a car driven by someone who is insured by CTH

To talk to us about any specific accident or claim, give us a call on 808080.

What if my car has been stolen or broken into?

You need to report the incident to the police and ask them for a crime reference number. You will need this when making your claim. Once the crime is reported, please give us a call on 808080.

If you have comprehensive insurance, you will usually be covered for any vandalism or malicious damage to your vehicle that wasn’t caused by another vehicle. This type of damage is not normally covered if you only have third party, fire and theft insurance cover.

It’s worth remembering that you’ll need to pay the excess when making a claim. Your excess amount can be found in your policy documents.

What if my windscreen, window, or glass sunroof is damaged?

If your windscreen has a chip or crack, then you should get it repaired as soon as possible. If you leave it too long the damage could spread, which is a safety issue and could also end up costing more if the windscreen must be replaced.

Our CTH Motor comprehensive insurance scheme covers you for any repairs or glass replacement required. Please contact our approved repairer Manx Autoglazing 07624 490774.The policy excess is £60.00 for a private car Motor Policy and £80.00 for a Commercial Vehicle Policy. This will not affect your no claims discount.

If you are off island, please contact a repairer of your choosing and provide them with your policy information.

What if my car is beyond repair?

If the cost of repairing the damage to your vehicle is more than the cost of replacing it, then your car may be considered a total loss or “Write Off”. This means the insurer will put a settlement value on the vehicle.

If you need to make a claim and would like to discuss the options, give us a call on 808080.

What happens if I have a Manx Cherished number plate?

Manx cherished number plates are assigned to the car, not a person. If your car’s been written off, you might lose the number plate too. If you want to keep it, you must let us and the Isle of Man Government Vehicle Registration & Licencing department know, so that we can try to retain it for you.

If you would like to discuss the options, give us a call on 808080.

How do I keep updated on my claim?

Making a claim and arranging repairs can take time. The insurer's motor engineer and repairers are here to help you with any questions or problems you may have. Please get in touch with them directly using the contact details we provide.

If the supplier can’t help, please contact us and we’ll try to get an update for you.

What is an excess?

The excess is the amount you’re required to pay when you make a claim on your insurance policy. The amount of excess payable is shown on your policy schedule.
If your vehicle is repairable, the excess will be paid by you to the garage when the repairs are completed.

If your vehicle is a total loss or write off, the excess will be deducted from the payment the insurance company makes to you.

I don’t think the incident was my fault. Who will reimburse the policy excess?

You are required to pay the excess whenever you make a claim on your policy. If the other person involved accepts responsibility for the incident, then their insurance company should reimburse your policy excess. If there is a disagreement over who is at fault, or if fault cannot be established, then you may have to accept some responsibility and may only be able to recover some of your excess.

To talk to us about any specific accident or claim, give us a call on 808080.

What if liability is disputed between the parties involved in the incident?

Disputes of this nature will depend on the type of incident and what happened. Your insurer may be able to determine fault based on claims of a similar nature. If your claim is more complicated then will be important to gather any evidence that is available including photos, witness statements, sketch of the road and vehicle positions, etc.

The insurer may ask an investigator to take a formal statement. Your insurer will review all the evidence and discuss what they feel the position is. On some occasions, you may be asked to accept a shared responsibility for the incident.

Can I pay for the repairs myself in order to retain my No Claims Bonus?

Yes, you can. However, if a third party is involved this may not be possible (or recommended). If you feel the claim is non-fault, then this could result in a dispute that may mean you become liable to pay the third-party claim. If you still would like to discuss this option, please contact us on 01624 808080.
